The biological function assisting means 1 is embedded in the body and is provided with a transmitter 11 and a receiver 12 for communicating with the in vitro control means 2. The in vitro control means 2 controls the biological function assisting means 1 embedded in the body from the outside. The in vitro control means 2 includes a transmitter 21 and a receiver 22 for communicating with the biological function assisting means 1. The transmitters 11 and 21 modulate the polarization plane of the laser beam and emit as a transmission signal. The receivers 12 and 22 have light receiving means for selectively receiving light in a predetermined polarization state. The receivers 12 and 22 output an electrical signal corresponding to the polarization state (polarization angle or ellipticity) of the received light. Full duplex communication between a strong scattering medium such as a human body and its outside can reduce the power consumption of the apparatus in the body.
