The device detects pulses of blood pulsing through an artery. It has a carrier (4) to be positioned flat against a part of the body in which the artery is located. It also has a pulse detector. The latter has a pulse probe (5) which is raised above the carrier lying flat against the body, in the direction of the artery. The pulse probe (5) is formed such that its length, in the surface parallel to the locating surface of the carrier (4), is greater than its width and its height above the carrier (4). Preferably the length, width and height dimensions of the probe (5) are in the range of 1 to 0.2 - 0.7 to 0.1 - 0.4. The probe may have a prismatic cross-section tapered in the direction of the artery (2). The pulse detector may have a piezoelectric convertor, a reflection light box or an ultrasound transmitter and receiver.
