The present invention relates to oligonucleotides that form a G-quartet structure that has been found useful in fluorescence assays to detect selected nucleic acid sequences. When one end of the oligonucleotide is labeled with a donor fluorophore and the other end is labeled with a receptor dye, the molecule, which is a G-quartet structure, is folded so that the donor-acceptor pair comes very close, The reaction between the two labels results in a loss of fluorescence of the donor or a change in other fluorescence as a result of the close proximity of the two dyes.
