The disclosed technique and apparatus utilizes the differentcharacteristic responses of a plurality of signals from apropagation or induction well logging device to determine thevertical and horizontal resistivity of formations surrounding aborehole. In a disclosed embodiment, a method is set forth fordetermining the horizontal conductivity and the verticalconductivity of formations surrounding an earth borehole,including the following steps: a) deriving first and secondformation conductivity values from measurements taken in theborehole; b) selecting a horizontal conductivity model value anda vertical conductivity model value, c) computing error valuesfrom the differences between: (i) first and second compositeconductivity values computed as a function of the horizontal andvertical conductivity model values, and (ii) the first and secondderived formation conductivity values; d) modifying thehorizontal and vertical conductivity model values; e) repeatingsteps (c) and (d) until predetermined criteria of the errorvalues are met; and f) outputting modified horizontal andvertical conductivity model values.
