Use of beta -carboline derivatives of formula (I) and their enantiomers, reacemates, diastereomers and salts, for the preparation of pharmaceutical compositions having anti-metastatic activity or inhibitory activity of the tumour invasion process, is new. R = H, 1-5C alkyl, phenyl optionally substituted by 1-5C alkoxy, or (CH2)nCO2H; n = 1-3; R1 = H or CO2R4; R4 = H or 1-5C alkyl; R2 = H or CO2R4; and R3 = H, halo, 1-4C alkoxy or benzyloxy. Also claimed is use of (I) in compositions for treating or preventing conditions associated with the activity of the matrix metallo-proteinases.
