The invention relates to a method of manufacturing steel balls for use in ball mills, the method providing for the effective use of fine particle chromium ore, both for the formation of a mould in which the steel balls can be formed and for the production of molten ferrochromium which is combined with scrap steel for producing molten chromium alloy steel, of which the balls are formed. The fine particle chromium ore is used to form the whole or part of a mould and following the formation of steel balls in the mould of chromium alloy steel, the mould parts of chromium ore, together with chromium alloy steel remaining attached thereto after the formation of the balls, is used to produce ferrochromium. This ferrochromium is hence combined with scarp steel for producing further chromium allow steel of which further steel balls are formed.
