A novel method for screening chemical compounds(test ligands) for potential pharmaceutical effectiveness isprovided. The disclosed method identifies possibletherapeutic test ligands by placing them in the presence oftarget proteins and determining their ability to increase ordecrease the ratio of folded target protein to unfoldedtarget protein. The present methods do not require thatbiochemical function of the target protein be known, northat any other ligands be previously identified.
