NEW MATERIAL: A cinnoline represented by formula I [wherein X is OR1 or NR1R2 {wherein R1 is alkyl, alkenyl or alkynyl and R2 is H or CH3 (R2 is CH3 when R1 is CH3)}; Y is alkyl, alkenyl, alkoxyalkyl, phenyl, benzyl, etc.; and R is alkyl, pohenyl or naphthyl]. ;EXAMPLE: 1-Phenyl-1,4-dihydro-4-oxo-5-methoxycinnoline-3-carboxylic acid. ;USE: A pollen suppressant. This pollen suppressant is used to bring about male sterility of a graminous crop such as wheat, barley, rye, oat, millet, rice or corn. ;PROCESS: For example, a compd. represented by formula II (wherein R' is substd. phenyl) is reacted with an ethanolic base and the reaction product is converted to a dicarboxylic acid which is, in turn, subjected to Friedel-Crafts acylation reaction to obtain a compd. represented by formula III being one of compds. represented by formula I.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1991,JPO
