PURPOSE:To provide the subject chelating agent consisting of a polyalkylenepolyamine polyacetic acid derivative, having excellent contrast- enhancing capability, stability and durability in blood, free from high osmotic pressure and useful as an agent for diagnostic imaging and diagnostic for arteriosclerosis, etc. CONSTITUTION:The objective chelating agent consisting of a compound expressed by formula IV (R3 to R6 are OH or group of formula V) (e.g. diethylenetriamine pentaacetic acid diamide) can be produced by dehydrating a polyalkylenepolyamine polyacetic acid compound of formula I [R1 and R2 are H or lower alkyl; (m) is integer of 1-3] (e.g. diethylenetriamine pentaacetic acid) to form an acid dianhydride derivative of formula II (e.g. diethylenetriamine pentaacetic acid dianhydride) and reacting the anhydride with a compound of formula III (A is H, lower alkyl, lower alkoxy, halogen or trifluoromethyl; B is alkyl or alkenyl; Y is alkylene; X1 is NH2 or OH; (n) is 0 or 1) (e.g. 4-octylaniline).
