PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To efficiently find such a general polynomial type rule that an exponent part is not limited to an integer by finding the search width of the quasi-Newton method as the minimum point of the quadratic approximation expression of a learning object function consisting of gradient and curvature to the search width, and selecting a learning result by using an evaluation scale. ;SOLUTION: The learning object functional expression is set by formularizing a rule discovery as a learning problem of a neural network (step 1). Then the search direction of the quasi-Newton method is calculated by the quasi-Newton method with storage capacity proportional to local parameters that a user defines, and the search width of the quasi-Newton method is find repeatedly as the minimum point of the quadratic approximation expression of the learning object function consisting of the gradient and curvature to the search width to make the neural network learn (step 2). Respective coupling weights between the input layer and intermediate layer of the neural network after the learning are regarded as exponential values and the rule is acquired in the form of a general polynomial having the respective coupling weights as coefficient values (step 3).;COPYRIGHT: (C)1998,JPO
