Mass spectrometer using constant magnetic and varying electric fields - has three principal electrodes, interleaved by slotted auxiliary electrodes and thermionic electrons to produce ions in selection space
The mass spectrometer has a screen of electrons emitted by a hot cathode and confined by a uniform magnetic field. The ions thus formed are pulled parallel to the electric field prior to a slot (f1) in the second principal electrode (S2). The second and third (S3) principal electrode are separated by insulating plates with surface conductivity to provide an ohmic resistance between them and thus a uniform electric field. For a suitable electric field the ions of a certain mass, after forming a cycloid, are recovered by a collector outside the selection space, opposite a slot (f2) in the second principal electrode at a certain distance away from the first slot.
