The invention relates to an apparatus for controlling the slide-bar cylinders of hydraulic self-advancing support units as a function of the allocated advancing cylinders with the use of a control-valve device for pressurising the said cylinders and with an activating valve (17) (preferably hydraulically operable) which is arranged in a connecting line (18) connecting the annular spaces (10, 14) of the two cylinders. Furthermore, the control apparatus has an overflow valve which is allocated to the connecting line and which discharges the pressure fluid expelled from the annular space (14) of the advancing cylinder (1) during the advancing operation when the slide-bar cylinder (2) is fully retracted. According to the invention, the valve device (21) forming the overflow valve is located in the piston (20) of the slide-bar cylinder (2), it being arranged in such a way that it opens by stem actuation the connection between the annular space (10) and the piston space (9) when the slide-bar cylinder is fully retracted. In this arrangement, the valve device (21) preferably has a closing valve which opens and closes in the opposite direction to the overflow valve and shuts off the outflow passage arranged in the piston (20) of the slide-bar cylinder when pressure fluid is admitted to the piston space (9) of the slide-bar cylinder.
