Particles such as grains, flakes, drops with dimensions of between approximately 10 mu m up to several mm are to be investigated to determine the extent to which they can be or are transported by a gas or liquid flow. For this purpose, the mass and/or velocity is to be determined in common with the number of particles with counting rates of up to 105 cm-2 sec-1. A mechanical vibrating system is provided for determining the desired variables. A sensor head (1) is constructed as a strongly damped longitudinally vibrating rod and has a piezoelectric crystal (2), two rod members (3, 4) arranged symmetrically relative to said crystal, and a sleeve (5) which retains these parts coaxially. Determination of grain sizes; sediment analyses; counting and determination of a mass of water drops/ice crystals in clouds; determinations of migrations of dunes and drifting of snow; determination of properties and selection of fluid media for transporting particles.
