The method determines any leaks in basins having sloping or intermediate layers which are sealed from the earth by a water-tight seal layer. Strip type measurement probes or electrodes (24) are laid under the seal layer running from one edge of the lagoon to another, in the region of the bottom (23) of the lagoon, with a predetermined spacing. The measurement probes are connected via measurement probe terminals (26) to a current source, on one side, and to a resistance measurement on the other side. The measurement probe terminals are connected to a measurement and circuitry centre. Preferably the resistance is measured continually. The measurement probes may be insulated and laid in layers leading to the mains water.
