A spindle for an aerostatic mounting of a tool that rotates at a high speed, e.g. a spinning rotor is claimed. It consists of a rotating shaft (5) which is mounted aero-statically in at least two bearings (6, 11) in the axial and the radial direction. The shaft (5) features a freely oscillating extension (2) and the two aerostatic bearings (6, 11) are fastened separately and elastically in the spindle housing.
