The improved airbag system has a responsive reaction to the kinetic energy which needs to be absorbed. Sensors provide a measure of the rate of impact as well as the position and wt. of the occupants. The release of the gasses into the airbag are controlled to match the support requirements by varying the inflation rate in a continuous manner. The sensors identify which seats are occupied, the size, weight and height of each occupant, the direction of impact as well as the magnitude of the impact. Also monitored, is whether safety belts are fitted.
