In an arrangement for coating a web of paper or board (2), a driven applicator roll (8) with a smooth outer surface forms, together with a backing roll (5), has coating gap to which a coating medium is delivered and is in contact with a chamber (10) for the coating medium which communicates with a supply passage (15). The coating applicator roll (8) is located in an opening in the coating medium chamber facing the backing roll and can be moved in the direction of the backing roll by the hydrostatic pressure of the coating medium. Also claimed is a coating installation using the claimed coating application system. Pref. a coating gap (11) is formed on the "upstream" side of the coating roll between the roll and an extension (18) of a wall (17) of the coating medium chamber (10). The passage leading to the gap (11) can be controllably restricted by a throttling strip.
