The present invention relates to an apparatus for decoding a digital audio signal for both MPEG and AC-3, which enables to decode compatible audio bitstreams encoded and compressed by MPEG and AC-3 compression algorithms, respectively. An apparatus for decoding a digital audio signal according to the present invention includes a decoder for decoding bit data of an audio compression method added by receiving bit data indicating an audio compression method used in an encoded audio bit stream from an encoder and receiving the same during transmission. MPEG audio decoder that decodes the audio bitstream compressed by the compression algorithm and restores it to the original audio signal, and AC-3 decodes the audio bitstream compressed by the compression algorithm of AC-3 and restores it to the original audio signal. An audio decoder and a control unit for controlling only one audio decoder of the MPEG audio decoder and the AC-3 audio decoder to be in an operable enabled state according to the decoded bit data of the audio compression scheme.
