The preparation of an alkenyl succinimide or polyalkenyl succinimide comprises: (a) the preparation of an alkenyl- or polyalkenylsuccinic anhydride by reaction between an olefin or a polyolefin with unsaturated dicarboxylic acid anhydride, e.g. maleic anhydride or substituted maleic anhydride with one or two methyl groups at 150-300 degrees C, in an aromatic solvent, e.g. toluene or xylenes in a ratio of 30-70 wt.% w.r.t. the reaction mixture, in which a fraction of the unsaturated dicarboxylic acid anhydride does not react with the olefin or the polyolefin; (b) reaction of the unreacted unsaturated dicarboxylic acid anhydride from step (a) with alcohol or amine, at a temperature from ambient temperature to the b. pt. of the solvent; and (c) reaction of the resulting product from step (b) with an amine.
