The invention relates to a magnetic substance for local hyperthermal treatment of tumours, in particular smaller tumours in the order of a few millimetres in diameter. The object of the invention is to provide a magnetic substance which can be concentrated by way of angiogenesis in the tumour and metabolised after local hyperthermia in the organism. The object is attained in that using tumour angiogenesis, iron oxide particles of a diameter in the order of 10 nm to 1 νm which are suspended in a solution and have a level of coercive field strength, when in a dry state, of from 0.8 to below 16 kA/m are transferred into the tumour to be treated and are exposed therein, in a frequency range of ξ 10kHz to 10 MHz, to a magnetic alternating field of a coil which produces magnetic fields at the site of the tumour which are larger than 0.8 kA/m. The mass of the inserted iron oxide particles is fixed to be substantially proportional to 1/ξ.
