PURPOSE:To decide whether a mechanical physical quantity regarding the outer peripheral surface of the wire material which is sectioned circularly is normal or not by utilizing a correcting machine which corrects the wire material while rotating the material in its circumferential direction and sending it lengthwise. CONSTITUTION:A light emission part 40 is positioned on one side of the wire material W which is conveyed and irradiates the outer peripheral part of the long material W which is sent lengthwise by the correcting machine 1 while rotated in its circumferential direction, with the light having projection width S larger than its diameter DELTAt. A photodetection part 41 is positioned on the other side of the wire material W and receives the light projected by the light emission part 40. A control means 42 compares measurement data on the wire material W obtained by the photodetection part 41 with a reference value to decide whether the mechanical physical quantity regarding the outer peripheral surface of the wire material W is normal or not. Thus, the rotation phenomenon of the long material W by the correcting machine 1 is utilized, so a material rotating device which rotates the wire material W in its circumferential direction after correction is not required and the mechanical physical quantity regarding the outer peripheral surface of the wire material W, e.g. size can be inspected. Consequently, the mechanical physical quantity regarding the outer peripheral surface of the wire material W is used as a standard to secure good quality.
