PURPOSE:To obtain a uniform bistable orientation state which exhibits high stability to impact or strain with the ferroelectric liquid crystal element unit by confining the sharp angle formed by intersecting of the chiral smectic C phase thereof with the normal direction of the layer within a prescribed range. CONSTITUTION:The liquid crystal panel formed by using a ferroelectric liquid crystal is supported at such two sides here the sharp angle theta1 formed by the intersection of the chiral smectic C phase of the liquid crystal panel with the normal direction of the liquid crystal layer attains 0 deg.=theta125 deg.. The sharp angle theta1 is preferably 0 deg.=theta115 deg. and is further preferably theta1=0 deg.. The ferroelectric smectic liquid crystal element unit having the uniform bistable orientation state which exhibits the high stability to the supporting impact or strain is obtd. by confining the sharp angle theta1 within the prescribed range in such a manner.
