PURPOSE: To analyze an AB5 hydrogen storing alloy with high accuracy by respectively determining rare-earth elements after separating the rare-earth elements from ordinary elements by using a cation exchange resin and determining each ordinary element after separating the ordinary elements from each other by using an anion exchange resin. CONSTITUTION: The A of a AB5 hydrogen storing on alloy is composed at least of one element selected from among the group of La, Ce, Pr, and Nd and the B is composed at least of one element selected from among the group of Al, Co, Mn, and Ni. The alloy is dissolved in an oxidizing acid, such as the aqua regia, etc. When a solution prepared by diluting the aqua regia dissolving the AB5 is passed through a column of a cation exchange resin, the resin adsorbs both the rare-earth and ordinary elements. When the column is washed with a hydrochloric acid, etc., the adsorbed ordinary and rare-earth elements are eluted in the solution. Therefore, the rare-earth elements can be determined. Similarly, the ordinary elements are adsorbed to an anion exchange resin and the elements are separately determined after separating the elements from each other.
