PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To efficiently separate, remove and recover heavy metals represented by Cd by immersing the viscera of fish and shellfishes into dilute sulfuric acid to elute the heavy metals and bringing the eluate into contact with cation exchange resins. SOLUTION: The viscera of the fish and shellfishes and more particularly the internal organs of scallops are immersed into the dilute sulfuric acid and the liquid is stirred to elute the heavy metals and more particularly Cd into the liquid; thereafter, the eluate is fed into a column packed with the cation exchange resins to bring the liquid into contact with the cation exchange resins, by which the heavy metals are removed from the eluate. Further, the cation exchange resins in which the heavy metals are thickened and accumulated are brought into contact with an acid to reverse extract the heavy metals. The extracting liquid is electrolyzed, by which the heavy metals are recovered. As a result, the heavy metals are almost completely removed and, therefore, the reutilization of the residual viscera of the fish and shellfishes as a protein resource is possible. Strongly acidic cation exchange resins are preferably used as the cation exchange resins so as to withstand the use in the dilute sulfuric acid soln.
