The device (1) has a transmitting element which emits an optical beam, and a receiving element. The optical beam is guided over the markings. Light is reflected from the markings and has an amplitude modulation impressed by the contrast of the markings. The received reflected light is analysed in an analysis unit. The device is installed on an object (14) movable relative to a target object (15) on which reference markings (17) are arranged. To position the object relative to the target object, the contrast patterns of the reference markings are read by the device and are analysed in the analysis unit. The device has a frame (19) with test markings (21,22). The test markings are spaced apart from each other and arranged so the reference markings are detected by the optical beam passing between them. The distance of the reference markings from the test markings is analysed in the analysis unit to position the device.
