In accordance with the present invention, one or more sets of prototype descriptions are maintained for a number of class objects stored on a computer database. These prototypes are used as a basis for identifying the class of the provided object. A trainer determines when new prototypes are required to be added to the database based on current match results. This allows the system to be trained to recognize items in classes that are significantly different from the items that were initially used to determine the classification rule. A determination is made as to which prototype can be removed based on their match histories. This allows the system to optimize itself to work with a bounded collection of prototypes. This also allows the system to track changes in class characteristics over time and adjust the corresponding set of prototypes accordingly.;Selectivity: 1st degree
