The present apparatus detects an earth fault in an exciting circuit having a neutral potential of a neutral point and outputting a excitation voltage whose frequency and / or amplitude is controlled, and an alternating-current excitation variable-speed rotary machine to which excitation voltage is applied from the exciting circuit. In this apparatus, the neutral point and the ground are connected through a ground resistance, a current flowing through the neutral point from the ground is detected through the ground resistance, and the ground fault is detected based on the detected current. Therefore, this device can reliably detect the ground fault of the excitation winding and the exciting circuit of the AC excitation rotor even in the operating state of the AC excitation rotor.
