PROCESS FOR THE RECOVERY OF ALKANOLAMINES FROM THEIR HEAT-STABLE SALTS FORMED IN ALKANOLAMINE SORBENT SOLUTIONS (AND) PROCESS FOR THE RECOVERY OF ALKANOLAMINES FROM THEIR HEAT-STABLE SALTS FORMED DURING ABSORBENT THERMAL REGENERATIVE- STEP OF GAS CONDITIONING PROCESSES
A process for removing heat stable alkanolaminesalts from an alkanolamine sorbent employed in gasconditioning for the removal of acid gases from a gasstream wherein the heat stable alkanolamine salts areformed during thermal regeneration of the alkanolaminesorbent. In the process, the lean regenerated aminesorbent solution is fed to an electrochemical cellcomprising a housing which is separated by an anionexchange membrane into an anode and a cathodecompartment, wherein the anode compartment contains aplatinum coated, platinized or iridium oxide coatedanode and the cathode comprises an expanded metal metalplate cathode. The anode compartment contains anaqueous anolyte solution of an alkali metal salt whichis capable of reacting with the anions of the heatstable alkanolamine salts, and withdrawing from thecathode compartment a lean amine sorbent. The processis an effective way to maintain the overall efficiencyof the amine with respect to regeneration of the aminesorbent for reuse in the absorbing process anddistinguishes from conventional processes in which theamine sorbent solution is transported to a caustictreater wherein the salts are decomposed to theirrespective amine and salt components. Such processesare time consuming, not readily adaptable to fieldoperation on site, and relatively expensive.
