PURPOSE: To more uniformly orient liquid crystal molecules without adversely affecting the substrate surface to be subjected to an orientation treatment. ;CONSTITUTION: This roller 12 for the orientation treatment is constituted by including a roller body 19 and a metallic film 20 which covers the outer peripheral surface of this roller body 19 and has a finely rugged surface. The roller 12 for the orientation treatment is formed by subjecting the outer peripheral surface of the roller body 19 to a mirror finishing treatment, then forming the metallic film 20 on this outer peripheral surface and further forming ruggedness on the metallic film surface. While a substrate 18 to be treated is heated by a heater 15 arranged in the roller 12 for the orientation treatment, this substrate 18 to be treated is clamped between a transporting roller and the roller 12 for the orientation treatment and the ruggedness on the surface of the roller 12 for the orientation treatment is transferred onto the surface of the substrate 18 to be treated, by which the orientation treatment is executed.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1996,JPO
