PURPOSE: To measure underground relative dielectric constant with high precision and measure a distance up to a reflected object and geological features with high precision in the same way. ;CONSTITUTION: Electromagnetic waves having a certain frequency f0 are transmitted into the ground from a transmission antenna 3, and surface reflected waves synthesized by the transmitted waves are received by a reception antenna 4 to distinguish frequency f from the attenuation cycle of a first cycle. By checking this frequency f with frequency.relative dielectric constant characteristics data which indicates correlation with relative dielectric constant, corresponding relative dielectric constant is obtained. A voltage peak point of mutual correlation function of a waveform of the received signal and natural attenuation waveform in the case where there is no reflection due to an obstacle is obtained, and the position of the reflected object is calculated based on time T of the peak point and propagation velocity μ of electromagnetic waves obtained from the relative dielectric constant which is measured previously. Furthermore, an attenuation rate is obtained from the natural attenuation waveform in the case where there is no reflection due to the obstacle to calculate specific resistance or conductivity from the attenuation rate, and corresponding type of geological features is extracted from data base by using this value and relative dielectric constant which is measured previously as parameters.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1996,JPO
