PURPOSE: To provide a process for producing a thin type liquid crystal optical element consisting of thin substrates, an element formed as the thin type liquid crystal optical element for an optical waveguide which is sufficiently low in loss when inserted into the optical waveguide and a waveguide type optical device for which this element is used. ;CONSTITUTION: The liquid crystal optical element is obtd. by a process for production having at least a stage for forming polymer films 1 respectively on two sheets of the temporary substrates 7, 7, a stage for forming transparent electrodes 2 on the polymer films 1 formed on the temporary substrates 7, 7, a stage for subjecting the surfaces of these electrodes 2 and the polymer films 1 to orientation treatment, a stage for disposing the surfaces of the polymer films 1 formed on the temporary substrates 7, 7 opposite to each other and sticking two sheets of the polymer films 1 together with the temporary substrates 7, 7 and a stage for stripping two sheets of the temporary substrates 7, 7 respectively from the polymer films 1.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1996,JPO
