Process for fluidizing the aqueous suspensions of red mud in the manufacture of alumina by the BAYER technique, which consists in dissolving (1) bauxite with soda, then decanting in the presence of a flocculating agent (F) formed reds (5) to separate them from the alumina (6), then to wash and decant these red mud in successive tanks (8, 12, 20, 25) while recycling upstream (13, 21, 22) the washing water, and finally eliminating (30, 31) the red mud (24) thus treated, and in which a mixture containing at least one flocculating agent (F) and at least one dispersing agent (D) is added to the suspension , characterized: BR/ - in that the flocculating agent (F) is a polyacrylamide with a molecular weight greater than ten million; BR/ - and in that the dispersing agent (D) is an acrylic acid polymer with a molecular weight of less than fifty thousand.
