A system for landscaping difficult surfaces involves the application of a growing medium to the surface to be landscaped. The growing medium (1) comprises a mixture of inorganic and organic materials with an air and water retaining component, e.g. hydrogel, modified polysaccharide. The medium is applied in one or more layers onto the area to be landscaped. Equipment for application is claimed and is also capable of applying a porous concrete (2) onto which the growing medium (1) is applied. The applicator comprises a tube fed with air at high velocity. A dosing unit for metering the growing medium into the air stream is located near the tube outlet. USE - The system is used to landscape difficult or heavily used areas e.g. rock walls, eroded areas, well used paths and sports areas.
