Process for transforming solid residues of hospital origin into completely sterile materials, characterized in that it essentially comprises the following operations: trituration of the solid residues of hospital origin; compacting of the triturated solid residues, optionally with binding materials; complete packaging of the triturated and compacted solid residues in a sheet of optically transparent, heat-resistant material stable and permeable to irradiation with electromagnetic waves with frequency in the microwave field, a culture medium suitable for bacterial growth being present on the said sheet - on the side facing the said residues; irradiation of the triturated, compacted and packaged solid residues with electromagnetic waves with frequency in the microwave field; inspection of the aforesaid irradiated solid residues to distinguish those in which bacterial growth is not observed from those in which bacterial growth is however observed; dispatch of the irradiated residues on which bacterial growth is not observed to dump, without further treatment; and repetition of the irradiation of any irradiated residues on which bacterial growth is observed.
