PURPOSE: To obtain the subject composition which contains specific amounts of a specific optically active compound and a compound having chiral smectic phase, thus is useful in display elements of excellent light stability and high response characteristics. ;CONSTITUTION: The objective composition comprises (A) 50 to 95wt.% of a compound of formula I [Rf is 1-2C fluoroalkyl; R1 is 7-20C alkyl which may be branched; R2, R3, R4 are H, 1-15C alkyl which may be branched, 2-15C alkenyl, 7-10C aralkyl; X1, is -COO-, -OCO-, -O-, single bond; X2 is -COO-,-OCO-, -CH2O-, -C≡C-, single bond; X3 is -COO-, -CH2O-, -O-; X4 is -O-, -OCO-, single bond; * is asymmetric carbon; A, Bare halogen, cyano, 6-membered ring- containing group which may be substituted with fluorine-containing alkyl; n is 0, 1), and a compound of formula II, (B) a compound other than the component A having chiral smectic phase, (C) a compound other than component A having smectic phase where B+C is 50 to 5wt.%.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1995,JPO
