PURPOSE:To automatically and efficiently perform measuring operation by obtaining an endothermic curve by the thermal analysis of a paper coating solution sample and detecting the presence of two separated endothermic peaks in the endothermic curve to evaluate the water retentivity of the sample. CONSTITUTION:An endothermic curve 1 is obtained by the thermal analysis of a paper coating solution sample. In this endothermic curve 1, a first endothermic peak A is present at a point of about 44 deg.C and a second endothermic peak B is present at a point of about 80 deg.C and the max. value C is necessarily present between both peaks A, B. The water content Wc and evaporated moisture quantity Wf in the sample at this peak C are calculated on the basis of a wt. change curve 2 and, further, the ratio R% of the water content Wc and the water content Wi before analysis or the ratio P% of the water content Wc and the quantity Wf is calculated to obtain a water retentivity evaluation index. The index, the R-value and the P-value display the water retentivity of the paper coating solution with extremely high reliability. Since a thermal analyser is used as a measuring apparatus, measuring operation can be automatically performed with good reproducibility.
