The signal (10) is applied to three speech analysers, looking at minimum, mean and maximum levels (11), the time structure (12) and the number of continuous cells of information (13). The outputs are applied to a detector (14) where different types of speech consonants are identified e.g. "continuous", "friction", "exploding", and "random" where the terms apply to the variation of the speech signal with time. After application to a time segmenter (15) and events selector (16), the signal (26) is applied to a speech modifier (21a-21c). The modifier is adapted to the type of speech identified, optimising the speech output. ADVANTAGE - Allows hard of hearing to receive sound signals corrected for their impairment, and improving speech recognition.
