Optical coupler for combining two laser beams - has acousto=optical deflector interacting with two ultrasonic waves in plane of incident linear-polarised beams
The optical coupler has an acousto-optic coupler which comprises an ultrasonic crystal (2) with two piezoelectric transducers (14,16) on opposite faces (4,6). The transducers are driven by frequency generators (24,26) with different frequencies f1 and f2. Two generators (30,32) generate two laser beams (31,33) which impinge on the side face (8) of the crystal at two different incident angles (311,331). The angles of incidence correspond to the generated frequencies f1 and f2, and result in rotation of the two laser beams by different angles (312,332), so that at the crystal output face (10) the two beams (51,53) are combined into a single beam (52). ADVANTAGE- The combined beam has the output polarities from both optical inputs polarised in the same direction.
