The process encodes a matrix image of the illuminated surface of a metallic sample. Values are taken from the binary coded image relating to levels of grey representative of the roughness of the surface. Parameters are defined relating to mean value, dispersion, density of measurements, density of pixels and connectivity of similar values. These parameters allow a classification of the surface finish. ADVANTAGE - Automatic classification of surface finish without need for expert evaluation.
