Determn of lean fuel-air mixture limit for IC engine - measuring stream of ions and characteristic value of flowing ion stream in one cylinder of engine immediately after ignition to give lean mixture limiting value.
The characteristic value for the ion stream is the sum of the time sections, in which the ion stream lies respectively above a predetermined reference level. The characteristic value for the ion stream is the time duration from the ignition up to a last point, at which the ion stream lies above a predetermined reference level. The characteristic value for the ion stream can be the distribution of peak values of the ion stream. ADVANTAGE - Method can be operated near to upper limit of lean mixture combustion range, without increased fuel consumption and emission of noxious gases from exhaust.
