Microemulsions esp. for diagnosis and therapy of tumours - are protein-free and contain hydrophobic component of cholesterol ester and phospholipid(s) and opt. tri:glyceride(S) and/or free cholesterol
Microemulsions contg. as the hydrophobic component, a mixt. of a cholesterol ester, phospholipid(s) and opt. triglyceride(s) and/or free cholesterol. USE/ADVANTAGE - The microemulsions can be used as carriers for drugs. They are protein free, but on account of their lipid composition have similarities with 2 DL (low density lipoprotein), but contain no protein component. The microemulsions can bind on the LDL specific receptors which are present in most body tissues. Thus if the microemulsions are injected in plasma mixed with Apo E, they bind on the LDL specific recpetors and are taken up pref. in neoplastic cells which have a greatly increased number of such receptors so that the microemulsions are esp. suitable for delivering active ingredients against cancer. A label, esp. a radioactive label can be worked into the microemulsion which can then be used for diagnoses or for localising malign tumors.
