In order to separate quantities of materials by floatation and sedimentation, in particular foodstuffs like meat, liquid carbon dioxide is used as a separating medium. Its temperature is preferably near the middle of the range minus twenty to minus ten degrees Centigrade and its pressure near the middle of the range twenty to thirty bar. The chamber (1) has inputs for material and liquid carbon dioxide, with a collector (6) in the upper part for the floatation products, and one in the lower part (7) for sedimentation products. Devices (5,8,9,15) control the temperature in order to maintain the required pressure of the carbon dioxide. ADVANTAGE - Separating medium can be re-used.
