New polyurethane-amides (I) are obtd. by condensing (co)polyamides (II) with bischlorocarbonate esters of the formula Cl-CO-O-R-O-CO-Cl (III); R = 4-22C alkylene, in which up to 2 CH2 gps. may be replaced by O atoms. (II) are low mol., mainly amine-terminated and at least 20 (wt.)% partly crystalline. They have Mn = 500-15000 and are prepd. from 6-44C alkane-dicarboxylic acids (IV) and bis-sec. diamines of the formula R1HN-Alk-NHR2 (VA) or Pip-Alk-Pip (VB); R1-2 = 1-22C alkyl; or R1+R2 = 2-12C alkylene, completing a heterocycle; Alk = 2-12C alkylene; Pip = piperidyl with free NH gps. (V) is unsubstd. piperidine (VC). USE/ADVANTAGE - (I) are used for making medical equipment and catheters. They are esp. suitable for films or tubes for medical purposes, e.g. implants. (I) are also useful for making other mouldings, including films and fibres. (I) are resistant to hydrolysis, have the required mechanical properties and are very thermostable, with max. wt. loss at over 450 deg.C. Their properties can be varied widely by selecting suitable (II) to give resinous thermoplastics and thermoplastic elastomers.
