Recycling plastic scrap, esp. from cars - by milling, re-granulating with addn. of compatibiliser, stabilisers, impact modifier and opt. reinforcing agents, and injection moulding
Process comprises crushing to give thermoplastic granules (II) contg. additives, mechanically regranulating in a heated screw extruder to give a multi-component mixt., and injecion moulding to produce plastic parts. Before or during extrusion, the milled material (II) is treated simultaneously or in successive with (a) compatibility improver(s) and/or coupling agent(s) consisting of anhydride- or acrylic acid-modified polypropylene or acid-modified EVA, (b) phenolic antioxidant(s) or phosphite mixt(s). as stabilisers, (c) impact modifier(s) based on EP rubber, polypropylene-ethylene-propylene-diene terpolymer, SB block copolymer and/or polypropylene granules and opt. (d) reinforcing agents in the form of glass fibres and/or inorganic fillers. The regranulated material is then injection moulded by known methods. (II) is mixed with 5-15 wt.% additive (a), 0.1-1.0 wt.% stabiliser (b), 5-20 wt.% impact modifier (c), 10-25 wt.% glass fibres and/or 10-20 wt.% inorganic filler, pref. talcum powder. Thermoplastic is polypropylene (PP). USE/ADVANTAGE - The plastic parts obtd. by this process are useful in the invisible areas of cars, or in visible areas after coating with a masking film or other decorative surface covering material (claimed). Provides a simple process for converting a mixt. of scrap plastics (I) (esp. from protective padding etc.) into a new material with the required properties for use in covering and lining component for cars.
