The spectral analyser (10) locates and identifies a radiation source which emits infrared has an input optical arrangement (2) which passes the infrared beam to a rotary mirror (3) and then through an aperture (4) to a grid (6). The mirror axis, aperture and grid structure are aligned in a first direction (elevation) and the location of the radiation source in the direction (azimuth) perpendicular to the first direction is determined from the mirror's angular position. A detector array (8) in the beam path after the grid determines the location of the radiation source in the first direction and spectrally analyses the infrared radiation. USE/ADVANTAGE - E.g. for target location in target seeking missiles. Suitable for both target location and identification.
