The sensor includes a source (1) of linearly polarised light , a polarising fibre (4) with two optical axes, a fibre coupler (2), a quarter-wave retarder (6), a sensor fibre (7) wound around the current conductor several times and an interference evaluation unit (12,13). Light from the source is coupled into the polarising fibre so that both polarisation directions are equally strongly stimulated. The retarder is arranged in the light path between the polarising fibre and the sensor fibre, which is mirrored at its free end. The light produced by the source has a coherence length shorter than the optical path difference between the two optical axes in the polarising fibre. ADVANTAGE - Simplified construction.
