This system enables at least one radio connection via a VHF radio between a base station at the landing site and an aircraft in the region. In either or both the aircraft and the base station at least one system determines position data of the aircraft. The determined position data are transmitted over the VHF radio to the base station and displayed there. The flight altitude is also derived in the aircraft and this is also transmitted to the base station and displayed there. This information can then be compared with a target altitude for the particular type of aircraft. If there is a significant deviation between these, the pilot can be warned accordingly and take appropriate action. USE/ADVANTAGE - Esp. for use around regional airports. Can accurately detect position of small aircraft in cost efficient manner to ensure safe landing for different types of aircraft, both co-operative and non-co-operative.
