The present invention relates to a process for the preparation of poly (secondary amines) having controlled functional functional densities comprising the steps of: (a) comprising reactive carbon-carbon double bonds, Contacting a polymer comprising olefinic unsaturation with carbon monoxide in hydrogen under hydroformylation reaction conditions in the presence of a hydroformylation reaction catalyst to produce a polyaldehyde having an impaired functional functional density; (b) preparing a poly (secondary amine) having a ratio of aldehyde groups to reactive carbon-carbon double bonds in the polyaldehyde substantially equal to the ratio of the secondary amine groups to the reactive carbon-carbon double bonds , Aliphatic or cycloaliphatic primary amines or aromatic primary amines which are sterically hindered with polyaldehyde are brought into contact under reductive amination conditions in the presence of alkali metal borohydride.
