The invention relates to a process for treating products made up of skins, hides or other sheet materials containing collagen, tanned or not, at different stages of their transformation. According to this process, the products are brought into contact in (1) with a dense fluid under pressure, for example CO2 in the supercritical state or liquid under pressure, which optionally contains one or more active substances and which is brought to a pressure Pi in (5) and at a temperature Ti in (7), either to degrease these products when using pure fluid, or to impregnate them with active substances such as tanning, reinforcing, coloring or water repellency. After this impregnation or this degreasing, the products are brought back to atmospheric pressure to remove from them the dense fluid. The process can be implemented in several stages of a chain for transforming skins into leathers or other sheet materials, the pressure and fluid temperature characteristics being adapted to the intended objective.
