A holding and adjusting device for the doctoring appliance of a machine for applying a substance is disclosed, as well as a doctor retrofitting process. Both ends of a carrying bar (6) which forms a part of the doctoring appliance are set into receiving holders arranged outside of the application width. A bearing (5) is constituted by a bearing shell (12) and by an inner part (13) having a cross-section shaped as a circle segment. At least one of the ends of the carrying bar has a polygonal profile (14) which fits into a recess (15) of the bearing inner part (13) having a corresponding polygonal shape. The doctoring appliance may thus be rapidly retrofitted and/or adapted to different working conditions. The doctoring appliance is pivoted to a spaced position with respect to the applying position before being retrofitted.
